A good night’s sleep is definitely not possible without a clean comfortable pillow. While there are several types of pillow fillings out there (such as feathers, foam, down, or fiberfill), one thing is certain: a pillow must regularly be cleaned to get rid of dust mites, body oils, and sweat.
Majority of feather pillow labels advice professional dry cleaning since the pillow can lose its shape in water. But home washing is definitely an option. In case you are unsure about which route to take, we highly recommend you to consult with the professional dry cleaners at 5th Avenue EnRoute Cleaners.

Step #1: Pretreat Stains
Before washing the pillow, be sure to inspect for any stains. If there are any, pretreat them before tossing them into the washer or basin with an enzyme-based stain remover or gentle detergent.
Step #2: Load the Machine Correctly
Toss the down coat into a washing machine using cold water and a gentle spin cycle. Avoid a center agitator for soft agitation. Additionally, it’s recommended to wash feather pillows in pairs in order to keep the machine in balance.
Step #3: Use a Gentle Detergent
Be sure to use only a gentle detergent since strong formulations can harm the fabric. You can also use low suds, high-efficiency detergent but in a very small quantity. Never use fabric softener when washing feather pillows.
Step #4: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the pillow twice to make sure all detergent is flushed away. If you’re hand washing the pillow, change the rinsing water multiple times until there’s no soapy residue left.
Step #5: Feather Fluffing
Once the pillow dries fully, it is time to fluff up the filling. Set the dryer to medium heat and throw in some wool dryer balls to loosen up stubborn feather clumps.
