With stains piling up, dust mites occurring, and other deep-rooted problems arising, it’s time for a deep cleaning. Cleaning Area Rug at Home Instructions

Step 1: Vacuum Loose Dirt

Thoroughly remove any loose dirt from both side of your area rug using a vacuum. People often make the mistake of neglecting the rug’s back area where most of the dust, dirt, and crumbs accumulate.

Step 2: Test Rug Cleaner for Colorfastness

For rug cleaner you have two options: either  buying a store-bought rug shampoo/cleaner and following its given instructions, or simply mixing some mild liquid dish soap into warm water. Next, test your chosen cleaner on a discreet area of the rug (for e.g. a tiny spot on the corner) to ensure no color bleed occurs. If it doesn’t, move to the next step.

Caution: Never use hot water as it may fade color or shrink fibers.

Step 3: Clean the Area Rug

Using a brush or sponge, scrub the cleaner/shampoo deep into the area rug till you are able to view suds. Allow the solution to sit there and work for few minutes before rinsing with clean water.

Step 4: Rinse with Clean Water

Using a water hose, thoroughly rinse your area rug. Ensure the water is clear of any soap before you finish off.

Step 5: Remove Excess Water

Next, use a squeegee (a tool often used for cleaning windows) to squeeze out any excess water out of your area rug. Firmly press the rubber-edged blade of the squeegee into the rug and jerk in order to get out as much water as you can out of it. Just be cautious to work only in the direction of the rug’s nap.

Step 6: Allow the Rug to Dry

Once excess water is removed, lay the rug flat and allow both sides to fully dry out.

Step 7: Brush/Vacuum the Rug Release Compacted Fibers

Run a clean soft-bristled brush or vacuum over the rug to release its fibers since its common for them to compact during the cleaning and drying process.
